In addition to distributing smartphones on credit, Young Rise Up Co. LTD runs Digital Empowerment Campaigns aimed at helping beneficiaries unlock the full potential of their devices. These campaigns are designed to promote basic digital literacy, encourage the responsible use of technology, and improve access to essential mobile services such as communication, financial transactions, e-government platforms, education, and entrepreneurship.

Through these campaigns, the company ensures that smartphone ownership is not only about access to a device but also about access to opportunities, information, and participation in the digital economy.

Objectives of the Campaigns

  • Equip first-time smartphone users with practical skills to use their devices confidently

  • Raise awareness on digital safety, mobile money, and online fraud prevention

  • Promote access to essential services like online banking, e-SACCOs, and digital learning platforms

  • Support women and youth in using smartphones for small business growth

  • Encourage the use of QR codes and digital IDs where applicable

Key Campaign Activities

  1. Community-Based Digital Training Sessions
Short, hands-on sessions conducted in local communities to teach:

    • Smartphone basics (navigation, settings, apps)

    • Internet browsing and social media use

    • Mobile money operations (sending, receiving, checking balances)

    • Responsible phone use (battery care, data management)

  2. Peer-to-Peer Learning via Cooperative Groups
Working through SACCOs and savings groups, members are encouraged to share knowledge and assist peers who are new to smartphones.

  3. Local Digital Champions Program
Selected individuals from the community are trained as “Digital Champions” who provide ongoing support and answer questions from other users.

  4. WhatsApp and SMS Tutorials
Short lessons, tips, and reminders are shared via WhatsApp or SMS to reinforce learning on common digital topics.

  5. Special Focus on Women and Youth
Targeted campaigns ensure that women and youth—often excluded from digital learning opportunities—are prioritized for training and mentoring.

Outcomes Expected

  • Increased smartphone usage beyond basic calling and texting

  • Growth in mobile money transactions among rural and informal users

  • Greater participation in digital education, health, and business apps

  • Empowered communities capable of navigating Rwanda’s growing digital infrastructure

Integration with Smartphone Distribution

Each customer who acquires a phone through Young Rise Up’s credit program is automatically eligible for participation in digital empowerment sessions. The aim is to ensure that technology access is accompanied by the knowledge and confidence to use it effectively.

Community Impact Example – Gicumbi District

In Gicumbi, where the program is currently active, hundreds of individuals have not only acquired smartphones on credit but have also gained new skills in digital communication, e-money usage, and online service access. These efforts are creating digitally capable communities that are better connected and more informed.
